Celebrating 1900 years of Hadrian’s Wall
Tour Details
We will be visiting incredibly special places in the history of the early Christian church in the north of England. Starting at the medieval Church of St Martin at Old Brampton, located inside the remains of an early Roman Fort, and then moving on to Birdoswald Roman Fort on Hadrian’s Wall, we will see how early Christianity grew and made use of former Roman sites. We will then travel to Bewcastle to see its stunning Anglo Saxon Cross and the 13th century St Cuthbert’s Church, also located inside the remains of a Roman Outpost Fort for Hadrian’s Wall. Our last stop will be Lanercost, an Augustinian Priory in the beautiful Irthing Valley, where we will explore the 13th century Priory and learn more about its turbulent history – from the Scottish Wars through to its destruction by Henry Vlll.
