The Hidden History of Carlisle Citadel

Tour Details

This is a last opportunity to see inside the Citadel before it closes in preparation for the building of the University of Cumbria that is expected to be completed in 2025.

Join our tour exploring both Citadel Towers. See the remains of the original Citadel built in 1541 on the orders of Henry VIII. Hear about the history of the site from a gate in the 12thc Norman city walls to the Citadel, the 19thc City Goal and the Crown Court in 1822. You will visit the Tudor gunports, the Nisi Prius Court Room, the Grand Jury Room, the former Crown Court, and Cells.

The Citadel is not a museum, it is a fantastic Grade 1 Listed building, now empty, but with many wonderful stories to tell.

All tickets for the Hidden History Tours of Carlisle Citadel are now sold but we are happy to offer some additional dates – shown in red.
